I produced a new record with local artist Stella Orr. Recorded on-location in a historic 19th C. barn in Point Reyes, and mixed at my studio in Sausalito. Check it out here

TECHNOLOGYProduct Management, UX / UI, Sound Design

Product design and development for a collaborative music app built on Web Audio/iOS. This was a radial step-sequencer that allowed for multiple users anywhere in the world to jam and compose complex rhythms together. Featuring polyrhythms, microtiming, sampling, effects and probablistic control in a multiplayer web audio context. I helped define the musical logic and UX flows, translating musical concepts into specs for a team of remote developers and also created sound banks to give the product a distinct and versatile voice out of the box.

	Geneva Social App

TECHNOLOGY
UX / UI Sound Design

In 2021 I was approached by the design team at Geneva to build out a new Audio UX for their app. After myself suffering through Slack dings and default iOS notications all through Covid, I was eager to do create something fresh and functional. Using a hacked physical modeling syntheszer from the late ‘90s, I began exploring sounds that felt more organic and tactile, honing in on textures that were natural enough to mesh with your environment, but percussive and pitched enough to direct your attention. Working with their design team over a few months, we leaned into sounds that felt a little ASMR-y but with a bit of “chiptune” ‘90s arcade throwback, to align with their mostly Gen Z community and the platform’s overall visual brand.

	THE CLOSEOUTS

ORIGINAL MUSIC

New band / new single. Not on spotify or anything really. But oh wait, there IS this top-secret internal-eyes only weblog of us kicking out the (mostly improvised) jams in a tiny-ass former dentist’s office in San Anselmo.

MUSIC

From the compilation Subcutaneous Sound. This piece was conceived as a process of quotation, the quote being from a small bit of Louis Armstrong's "St. James Infirmary". A digital recording of the opening phrase was recorded onto a 1960's 1/4" reel-to-reel deck, then played back off the tape and captured digitally again, then played back digitally and recorded onto the tape again, back to digital, back to tape - fifty some odd times. What results is an evolving degradation of the source in the form of repeated quotation, form of degradation known as "generation loss" where the medium drowns the message. As successive generations of the theme pass us by, new harmonic textures arise from its decay. These are joined by double bass (David Arend), piano, cymbals, electronics and guitar (performed by myself).
